Why WAV rather than MP3?
WAV is uncompressed, so nothing is thrown away — which is what you want before editing, mastering or running speech-to-text. It is a bigger file, but it is a faithful copy of the audio that was already in the video. Browsers have no MP3 encoder, so MP3 output is not offered here rather than being faked badly.
Does this lose any quality?
Nothing beyond what was already lost when the video was made. The audio is decoded and written out as raw PCM.
Why is the WAV bigger than the video?
